Drew Lacrosse Teams Earn ECAC Bids

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have each earned bids to the ECAC Metro/South Region Championships. The six-team women’s championship will begin Wednesday May 6, while the four-team men’s championship will start Friday May 9.

The Drew women earned the fourth seed for the championship and will host fifth seed Gwynedd-Mercy in a quarterfinal match in Madison, N.J. at 6 p.m. The winner will move on to take on top seed Dickinson in the semifinals on Saturday, with the finals the following day. The semifinals and finals will both be held at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.

The Ranger men earned the second seed in the four-team championship, and will host third seed SUNY-Maritime in the semifinal 7 p.m. Friday night. With a win, Drew would face the winner of the semifinal between top seed Swarthmore College and fourth-seed Manhattanville College on Sunday May 11 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

The Ranger women finished the season with a record of 9-7 and were the third seed for the Landmark women’s lacrosse postseason where the team was upended by Goucher in the opening round. Drew won four of its final six games down the stretch, including a win over the second-seed in the ECAC championship Stevens Tech. Led by freshman Stacie Brown, who was selected as the Landmark Player of the Year, Drew placed six players on the Landmark All-Conference Team. Drew outscored its foes 186-185 overall on the year, and totaled 64 goals in five Landmark matches.

Drew men’s lacrosse team will try to continue its momentum after the Rangers claimed the first Landmark men’s lacrosse championship. The team finished the season 9-7 and earned the top seed for the conference postseason where it earned tight victories over USMMA and Goucher to earn the title. After opening the season 0-4, the Rangers rebounded to drop just three games since March 20, one of which came in overtime. Head Coach Tom Leanos and his staff were named the Landmark Men’s Lacrosse Coaching Staff of the Year, while junior Michael DeGiovanni was the Landmark Player of the Year. He was also one of four Rangers named first-team All-Conference.

In the first year of Landmark competition eight conference teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids, while eight teams have participated in ECAC postseason championships.
