Landmark Players of the Week Selected
MADISON, N.J. - The fall sports season is into the home stretch and nine student-athletes have been chosen Landmark Players of the Weeks for their performances. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Men's Cross Country:
Scranton's Chris Wasnetsky turned in his best performance of the
season in a field of primarily Division I runners at the Princeton
Invitational. The senior covered the 8K course in a time of 25:35,
the fastest 8K time for both him and the Landmark at that distance
this season. His effort earned him a 39th-place finish at the meet
as Scranton placed 11th as a team.
Women's Cross Country:
Cadee Rockwell continued her strong season for Moravian, posting
another top time this past weekend. The senior placed fourth out of
108 runners in a field with a large number of Division I
competitors. Her time of 22:04.7 for the 6,000-meter course is the
fastest in the Landmark at that distance this season, and set a new
personal best for Rockwell.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Gretchen Kempf scored a pair of goals over two Landmark matches in
a 1-1 week for Scranton. She got Scranton on the scoreboard with
what turned out to be the match winner as Scranton handed Drew its
first Landmark loss and kept Scranton's postseason hopes alive.
Earlier in the week she struck for Scranton's second goal to take a
2-1 lead over Landmark foe Moravian before the Greyhounds rallied
for the win
Defensive Player of the Week:
Erin Thomas helped lead a Catholic defense that surrendered just
one goal in a pair of wins. In a 4-1 victory over Juniata, she
helped the Cardinals hold the opponents to just six shots and one
goal, breaking up several scoring opportunities from the fly
position on penalty corners. Earlier in the week the Cardinals
posted their sixth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over St.
Mary's. Thomas' defense helped Catholic limit their foe to four
shots in that outing.
Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Joe DeLuca helped Susquehanna to an unbeaten week with a strong
offensive contribution. Trailing 1-0 after a half against Landmark
foe Goucher, he scored his team's first goal to knot the match at
one, and then struck again less than 10 minutes later to put
Susquehanna on top for good. He also had his team's lone goal in a
1-1 draw with non-conference opponent Franklin & Marshall.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Drew goalkeeper Rich Boland earns the honor for the second-straight
week after recording two shutouts. He recorded four saves as Drew
improved to 3-1 in the conference with a 3-0 win. Earlier in the
week he stopped a total of five shots to record the clean sheet in
another 3-0 win, this time over 21st-ranked Muhlenberg. The two
shutouts were his sixth and seventh of the season.
Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Courtney Orgill scored the only goal as Catholic remained unbeaten
in Landmark play. The junior found the back of the net in the ninth
minute as the Cardinals went on to improve to 3-0 in Landmark
action with a 1-0 win over Juniata. The score moved her into a tie
for the Landmark lead with eight goals this season. Earlier in the
week she again had Catholic's only tally in a 2-1 loss to
non-conference opponent Shenandoah.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Junior defender Amanda Kresge helped Scranton remain unbeaten in
Landmark play by anchoring the team's defense. The Royals held Drew
to just six shots, three on goal, in 94 minutes of action en route
to a 1-0 overtime victory. With Kresge's help, the Royals have yet
to allow a conference goal. Earlier in the week Scranton conceded
just one goal and eight shots in a 1-0 setback to Western
Connecticut State.
Volleyball:
Goucher's Megan Chalk helped the Gophers secure a fourth-straight
Landmark postseason spot and two wins overall this past week. She
turned in one of the best performances in a Landmark match this
season, knocking out 29 kills with 16 digs and a .458 hitting
percentage in a 3-1 win over USMMA that clinched Goucher's
postseason appearance. She also had 16 kills earlier in the week
against Washington (Md.) and averaged 3.88 kills per set over five
matches. Her 29 kills and 32.5 points in the USMMA match were both
single-match highs in Landmark play this season, and she finished
the week averaging 4.62 points, 2.88 digs and .53 blocks per set.
She also added seven aces and seven assists.
