Landmark Selects Players Of The Week
MADISON, N.J. - Despite the unexpected wintry weather the fall regular season is nearly wrapped up and several student-athletes distinguished them selves to earn honors as Landmark Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Men's Cross Country:
Ian Quinlan was the first runner across the line at the 2011
Landmark Cross Country Championships held this weekend. The senior
improved on his best-ever fourth-place finish from last season,
winning the individual title by just over a second. He covered the
course which was shortened from its original 8,000-meter layout in
a time of 24:23.3 to give Susquehanna its fourth individual title
in the five year history of the Landmark Championship.
Women's Cross Country:
Moravian's Cadee Rockwell captured her first Landmark individual
title while also helping the Greyhounds to the Landmark
Championship. She was the first runner across the line in cold,
snowy conditions, running the 6,000-meter course in a time of 24:12
to win the race by 26 seconds. She improved two spots from the
previous season when she was the third-place finisher at the
meet.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Alicia Tamboia provided an offensive spark as Scranton won
its only two matches of the week. She scored twice in each of the
team's two wins. She found the cage in a 3-2 win over Vassar, and
then collected two more goals, including the match winner, in a 4-2
triumph over Keystone.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Catholic defender Catherine Mirsky helped the Cardinals pull off an
upset of previously-unbeaten and number-one ranked Salisbury in
their only game this past week. She led a Catholic defense that
surrendered just one goal to in the match, and limited Salisbury to
a pair of shots in the final 35 minutes. She also prevented a goal
with a defensive save in the contest.
Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Susquehanna's Andrew Murphy erupted for four goals in two
games, including a hat-trick in a critical conference match.
Needing a win to secure a Landmark postseason berth, the sophomore
opened the scoring with a goal in the 4th minute, and then added
two more early in the second half as the Crusaders sealed a trip to
the postseason with a win over Moravian. Earlier in the week he
found the net for Susquehanna's only goal in a loss to
non-conference rival Elizabethtown.
Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Mary McGann totaled four points over two matches as
Catholic completed the regular season with a pair of victories. In
the team's regular season finale, she struck for the only goal of
the match in the 63rd minute to give Catholic a 1-0 win over
Landmark foe Drew. Earlier in the week she assisted on a pair of
goals in a 6-0 non-conference win over Hood.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Moravian goalkeeper Tori Korona helped the team reach the Landmark
postseason with a strong performance in net. In the team’s
season finale against Susquehanna she recorded two saves while
surrendering one goal as Moravian got the point it needed with a
1-1 draw. Earlier in the week she kept York scoreless for 105
minutes by making five saves before allowing a goal in double
overtime. For the week she produced seven saves and allowed two
goals in 215 minutes of action.
Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the
Week:
Catholic's Caleb Capozella claimed five individual wins as part of
a 1-1 dual-meet week for the Cardinals. In a Landmark win over
Goucher he placed first in the 200 IM (2:05.16), the 100 fly
(54.28) and the 100 back (55.10) to help the Cardinals earn the
win. Earlier in the week he again won the 200 IM and 100 back,
swimming 2:03.54 and 55.48 respectively, while also swimming in the
winning 200-medley relay in a meet against St. Mary's
(Md.)
Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the
Week:
Carolyn Gillespie helped Scranton rally for a dual-meet win over
Widener to remain unbeaten in the early season. The senior won the
100 free in a time of 55.54 and also claimed first in the 100 fly
in a time of 59.08. She added a runner-up finish in the 200 free by
swimming 1:59.51 and anchored the winning 400 free relay that
posted a winning time of 3:45.58.
Volleyball:
Moravian libero Jesse Krasley turned in a record-breaking
performance for the Greyhounds in their only action of the week. In
a 3-2 win over Widener the junior set a new school record with 54
digs, averaging more than 10 digs per set to help the Greyhounds
claim the win. Her defense helped limit Widener to a .148 hitting
percentage for the match and allowed Moravian to win the final two
sets to secure the victory.
