Spring Sport Athletes Earn Player Of the Week Honors
MADISON, N.J. - All of the Landmark spring sports were in action this past week resulting in 14 student-athletes earning recognition as Landmark Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Baseball:
Player:
Gregg Steinman helped power Moravian to a 4-1 week,
including a three-game sweep of its opening Landmark series against
Catholic. The senior hit .765 for the week with 13 hits in 17
at-bats. He had a pair of extra base hits with two doubles, and
also drove in eight runs and score five times while drawing one
walk. He had at least two hits in four of five games, and went
9-for-11 in the weekend series with Catholic.
Pitcher:
USMMA senior Andy Martin did not allow a run over 10
innings of work in a pair of appearances this weekend. He helped
the Mariners claim a series win in the team's Landmark opener,
scattering seven hits and striking out two in a complete-game
shutout in the opener against Landmark foe Susquehanna. Earlier in
the week he struck out two in three innings of relief work while
allowing no runs on two hits against William Paterson.
Men's Lacrosse:
Offensive:
Drew's Andrew Somps provided significant offensive punch
as the Rangers won a pair of games to open the season 5-0 for the
first time in program history. He had a hand in half the team's
goals in a 10-9 overtime win over Susquehanna to open conference
play as he scored three times and passed out two assists. Earlier
in the week he scored four times and again had two assists in a win
over Southwestern (Texas). For the week he scored seven goals on 13
shots and totaled 11 points. He also added five ground balls and
one caused turnover.
Defensive:
Ben Worthington helped Scranton improve to 3-1 in the early season
with a strong effort in goal in a non-conference win over Lycoming.
The sophomore recorded six saves while surrendering only nine
goals, for a .400 save percentage in the match. He also caused
three turnovers from his goalie spot, and added seven ground balls
to the defensive effort.
Women's Lacrosse:
Offense:
Aileen Musynske's offense helped Drew win a trio of matches to
claim the Spring Fling Championship in West Palm Beach, Florida
this past week. The senior scored 13 goals, including six in the
championship match as the Rangers outlasted Nazareth 19-13. She
also had three goals in a win over Mt. St. Vincent at the event,
and four goals in the opening win over SUNY-Potsdam. She also
passed out one assist in each game. She added eight ground balls,
four caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls over the two
matches, while piling up 16 points.
Defense:
Susquehanna goalkeeper Emily Stankaitis earns the honor for the
second time in as many weeks after two more solid outings. The
junior stopped 25 shots for the week, seven in a win over Marymount
and then 18 in a victory over Alvernia. She allowed a total of 17
goals for an 8.50 goals against average on the week, and produced a
.595 save percentage. She also contributed three ground balls for
the defense as Susquehanna remained unbeaten on the season.
Softball:
Player:
Nina Curto powered the Catholic offense in a 3-1 week for
the Cardinals. She knocked out seven hits in 11 at-bats for a .636
batting average and a .909 slugging percentage as three of the
seven hits went for extra bases. She had a pair of three hit games
over the weekend, and also scored three runs with four RBI over the
four games.
Pitcher:
Christine Capalbo was a perfect 4-0 in four starts in the
circle for Scranton, including a win to help the Royals earn a
split in their Landmark opener. The senior tossed four complete
games totaling 27 innings while allowing only six earned runs for a
1.56 ERA on the week. She fanned 16 hitters while walking just four
during the period and allowed only two runs on six hits with four
strikeouts in the victory over Drew in the Landmark contest. She
didn't allow more than two earned runs in any of her four
outings.
Men's Tennis:
Tim McGurrin collected three wins in singles and doubles matches
this week, including a sweep in the team's Landmark opener. He
posted singles victories at his first singles spot against Landmark
foe Goucher as well as against Westminster and Gettysburg. He also
had doubles wins at second doubles against those same foes, and
finished the week with a 6-2 overall record.
Women's Tennis:
Freshman Megan Azzalina is off to a strong start in her
college career as she earned nine total wins for Scranton this past
week. She was a perfect 5-0 in singles action at sixth singles for
the Royals, including a win to help the Royals pull out a 5-4 win
over Goucher in their Landmark opener. She also was a perfect 4-0
in doubles action at third doubles this past week to produce nine
wins total with no losses.
Men's Outdoor Track & Field:
Field:
Jack Iosue opened the outdoor season with a strong effort for
Juniata at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Open hosted by Lynchburg College.
He won the javelin competition at the event with a best throw of
199' 6" a mark that would have ranked 18th in Division III in 2011
and would also rank as an NCAA Championship qualifying
performance.
Track:
Ceth Parker enjoyed a strong performance for Juniata to open the
outdoor season. The senior placed third in the 1,500 at the Dr.
Jack M. Toms Open at Lynchburg, running a personal-best time of
4:01.63. That mark would have been the fastest in the conference in
last year's outdoor season, and is just 1.6 seconds off the Juniata
record.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field:
Field:
Kristyn Ginter picked up a win for Juniata at the Dr. Jack M. Toms
Open at Lynchburg this past weekend. Ginter opened the outdoor
season with a win in the javelin, recording a winning throw of 115'
10" and ranked better than any throw she produced last season. It
would have ranked as the third best effort in the conference in the
2011 outdoor season.
Track:
Katrina Woods opened the outdoor season with a pair of personal
bests for Juniata at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Open. She won the 1,500
at the meet, running a time of 4:48.72 which missed the Juniata
record by just .60 seconds. She also set a new personal best with
her time of 2:27.18 in the 800, which earned her a 10th-place
finish.
