Spring Season Rolls On With Player of the Week Selections
MADISON, N.J. - The spring season rolls on with another 14 Landmark student-athletes recognized as Players of the Week for their performances over the past seven days. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Baseball
Player of the Week:
Ethan Rieker continued his hot offensive production for
Susquehanna, helping the team sweep a Landmark series from Drew.
The junior pounded out eight hits in four games during the week,
with five of the eight hits going for two bases. He also scored
four runs in the three-game series with Drew and drove in a pair of
runs while adding a stolen base. He hit safely in all four games,
and had at least two hits in three of the four contests.
Pitcher of the Week:
Brendan Close continued his dominant junior season as he
was one out away from a no-hitter in helping Moravian top Scranton
in Landmark play. The junior went all nine innings, allowing only
one hit, while striking out a school and Landmark record 16 batters
and surrendering only one walk. He did not allow a base runner
through 6 2/3 innings, and gave up an infield hit with two outs in
the ninth but still improved his record to 7-0 and posted the
shutout.
Men's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week:
Rory Averett powered the Goucher offense in a 19-13 win over USMMA
in Landmark action. The junior attacker scored a game-high eight
goals on 15 shots, and also added a pair of assists for a 10-point
performance in the win. He staked the Gophers to a 4-0 lead,
scoring the first four goals of the contest to help Goucher to the
victory.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Drew goalkeeper Charlie DeSocio was strong in net as the Rangers
rallied for a win over Scranton to earn their first Landmark win of
the year. The junior made 15 saves while playing all 60 minutes in
net, and allowed nine goals while facing 42 shots total from the
Royals. He also collected four ground balls in net, and made two
critical saves in the final minute to preserve the one-goal
win.
Women's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week:
Katie Buonpastore had two strong games to help Catholic to a pair
of victories. She capped the week by scoring four goals with an
assist as Catholic topped Landmark foe Goucher. Earlier in the week
she scored three times with two assists in a road win over
Haverford. She had 10 points from the two games, and also
contributed three ground balls and a caused turnover. Her seven
goals for the week came on just nine shots.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Goalkeeper Gaby Sena played two strong games in net as Catholic
produced a 2-0 week. She was particularly strong as the Cardinals
improved to 2-0 in Landmark play with a win over Goucher. She
allowed eight goals while making a career-high 15 saves and facing
29 shots as the Cardinals earned the win. She made a pair of saves
while conceding 11 goals earlier in the week in a 14-11 win over
Haverford. She boasted a 9.50 goals against average and .472 save
percentage for the week.
Softball
Player of the Week:
Amanda Paulus was strong at the plate as Moravian
extended its winning streak to 13 games with four victories. She
knocked out six hits in eight at-bats (.750 average) and reached
base on a pair of walks as Moravian swept doubleheaders with
Landmark foe USMMA and Kean. She had three extra base hits,
including a pair of home runs, and also scored eight runs and drove
in six. She homered against USMMA and Kean, and had at least two
hits in two of the four contests.
Pitcher of the Week:
Catholic’s Erin McMakin helped the team go 4-0 this week with
a pair of strong games in the circle. After earning a win in a
Landmark game against Drew on Saturday, she followed it up with a
no-hitter on Sunday in a win over Hood. Against Drew she allowed
three runs, two earned, over seven innings while striking out six
hitters and scattering three hits. On Sunday she tossed the
complete-game no-hit shutout, striking out four while walking just
one. She had an ERA of 1.00 for the week and struck out 10 hitters
in 14 innings while allowing only three hits.
Men's Tennis:
Moravian’s Kevin Holze was perfect in singles and doubles
action as the team enjoyed a 2-0 week. He posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at
first singles and teamed with Drew Shreter for an 8-1 second
doubles win in a Landmark win over USMMA. Earlier in the week he
battled to a three-set win at first singles against Muhlenberg and
again won an 8-5 decision at second doubles in the match.
Women's Tennis:
Goucher’s Meaghan Lee was unbeaten in singles action at her
number-two singles position in three matches last week. She helped
the Gophers remain unbeaten in Landmark play with a 6-2, 6-4 win
over Juniata, and rallied from a one-set deficit to claim a win
against Messiah in singles. She also had one of Goucher’s two
points with a singles win against Christopher Newport. Lee also
teamed with Addie Maxwell for wins at second doubles against
Juniata and Messiah, giving her a 5-1 overall record for the
week.
Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Field:
Moravian’s Gary Zack provided two strong efforts for the
Greyhounds at their own Coach P Open. He placed second in the
javelin with an NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 63.65 meters,
and then added a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw by tossing
41.47. The javelin mark is the best in the conference this year and
also would have been the top mark all of last season.
Track:
Eric Woodruff opened the outdoor season with two strong efforts for
Moravian at the Coach P Open. He won the 100-meter dash in an ECAC
qualifying time of 10.98, the fastest time in the Landmark so far
this season. He also ran the second leg on the 4x100 relay that
placed second and also ran an ECAC qualifying time of 42.67.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Field:
Juniata’s Angela Shaffer displayed her versatility by placing
first in the heptathlon at the Messiah Invitational. In her first
attempt at the event she scored 3,510 points, setting a new school
record and narrowly missing the Landmark record. She placed first
or second in three of the seven events, and broke a school record
that had been in place since 2002.
Track:
Moravian’s Cadee Rockwell turned in a stellar performance for
the Greyhounds at the Coach P Open. She set a new Landmark record,
and ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time by winning the 10,000
in a time of 36:39.33. The time bested the previous Landmark record
by more than two minutes and was nearly a minute ahead of the NCAA
provisional qualifying time.
