Landmark Selects Fourteen Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J. - A busy week of Landmark Conference spring sports action earned fourteen student-athletes selections as Landmark Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Baseball:
Player:
Dave Zubia powered the Moravian offense in a 4-1 week,
including a series victory over Landmark foe Scranton. He had 10
hits in 13 at-bats in the three-game series against Scranton, and
for the week hit .619 with a 1.333 slugging percentage. Seven of
his 10 hits against Scranton went for extra bases with four
doubles, two triples and a home run. For the week he notched 13
hits, six doubles, three triples, a home run and six RBI. He also
scored 10 runs, walked once and stole a pair of bases.
Pitcher:
Rocky Sawyer pitched a pair of complete games to earn two
wins in Landmark outings this past week. He opened the week with a
nine-inning one hitter as Scranton blanked Susquehanna 3-0. He
fanned eight and walked only one in the outing. He then helped
Scranton claim the last game of a three-game series with Moravian,
allowing four runs in nine innings with six strikeouts. For the
week he had a 2.00 ERA over 18 innings, striking out 14 and walking
four.
Men's Lacrosse:
Offensive:
Drew's Sean McGown was a key part of Drew's offensive
attack with strong all-around play in a pair of wins. McGowan was
dominant in face-off action in a Landmark win over USMMA, winning
13-of-14 face offs to help the Rangers control possession, and he
also scored a goal and assisted on two others. In a non-conference
win against Swarthmore he was 19-of-25 in face offs and added a
goal. He also had 21 ground balls for the week, 11 of them coming
against USMMA.
Defensive:
Washington & Jefferson junior goalkeeper Ran Kirby was stellar
in net as the President's went 1-1 last week. In a win over
Marymount he stopped 19 shots while conceding only seven goals,
good for a 73-percent save percentage as the team captured a 10-7
victory. Earlier in the week he allowed just nine goals with 16
saves in a tight loss to St. Vincent. For the week he posted an
8.00 goals against average with a save percentage of
68.6-percent.
Women's Lacrosse:
Offense:
In the team's only action of the week Lyndsay Rossi provided
offensive punch as Drew knocked off Goucher for its first Landmark
win of the year. She scored a game-high five goals in the match,
and assisted on another school as Drew matched its season high with
19 goals. She also had two draw controls in the match, and scored
her five goals on just seven shots.
Defense:
Yasmeen Ajdari played 90 strong minutes in goal for Catholic this
week. She made the start and played all 60 minutes for Catholic in
a win over Susquehanna that gave the Cardinals sole possession of
first place. She made nine saves while allowing only nine goals as
the Cardinals pulled out a 13-9 victory. Earlier in the week she
came on at halftime and made seven saves with only three goals
allowed against fourth-ranked Gettysburg. She produced a goals
against average of 8.00 for the week with a 57-percent save
percentage over two games.
Softball:
Player:
Dior George paced the Moravian offensive attack during a
5-1 week. She hit safely in five of the six games, including four
multi-hit games, finishing the week with a .550 average
(11-for-20). She had three doubles, and scored seven runs, and two
of the hits came in a win over Landmark foe Scranton. She also drew
five walks for the week, giving her a .640 on-base percentage, and
added five stolen bases.
Pitcher:
Allison Cullen went 2-0 last week for Susquehanna, helping
the team to a perfect 4-0 record. She tossed a complete-game
shutout over Juniata as the team swept a weekend series to take
sole possession of first place in the Landmark standings. She
allowed only four hits with three strikeouts in the win. Earlier in
the week she tossed seven innings and surrendered just two runs
with a pair of strikeouts in a 3-2 win over Wilkes. Her ERA for the
week was 2.00 over 14 innings, and she struck out five during the
period.
Men's Tennis:
Tim McGurrin was 4-0 in singles and doubles action this week as
Scranton earned two Landmark wins and clinched a postseason berth.
In a tight 5-4 win over Moravian he was responsible for two
victories, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory at first singles and
capturing an 8-5 win at second doubles. He repeated the feat
against Susquehanna, dropping only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory
and winning by an 8-3 score in doubles.
Women's Tennis:
Ariel Lin was unbeaten for Goucher in two Landmark matches
as the team went 1-1 to stay in the thick of the postseason race.
She earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles against Catholic, and
also teamed with Mara Bergman for an 8-2 win at first doubles. She
then closed the week with a 6-1, 6-1 singles win against Juniata
which tied the program record for singles victories in a season.
She and Bagman also posted an 8-4 victory at first doubles.
Men's Outdoor Track & Field:
Field:
In his first time competing in the event, Moravian's Nicco Dalpiaz
won the decathlon at the Mondschein Multi hosted by Kutztown over
the weekend. He piled up 6211 points in the 10-event competition,
the fifth-highest total in Division III this season. He cleared
4.85-meters in the pole vault to earn 865 points for his highest
total in any event, and had at least 448 points in each of the 10
events.
Track:
Ceth Parker led Juniata with a top performance at the Bucknell
Classic. He set a new school record and ran the fastest time in the
Landmark this season in the 1,500, covering the distance in a time
of 3:56.38. The time was more than four seconds better than his
previous best, and placed him 27th in the highly-competitive
field.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field:
Field:
Juniata's Angela Shaffer won the heptathlon event at the Messiah
Invitational for the second-consecutive season. Her point total of
4,042 points broke her own school record of 3,510 and ranks her
18th in NCAA Division III in that event. She set two new personal
bests in individual events at the meet and one season best. Her new
personal best in the high jump is tied for ninth in Division III
this season.
Track:
Camelia Mayfield produced one of four first-place finishes for
Catholic at the Messiah Invitational over the weekend. The
sophomore posted a winning time of 11:48.55 to place first among 10
competitors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The time is the second
fastest in the conference outdoor season this year, behind only her
own.
