Weather Does Not Derail Landmark Players of the Week

MADISON, N.J. - Despite some unpleasant spring weather that forced the juggling of conference schedules 14 student-athletes have been selected as Landmark Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.

Baseball
Player of the Week:
Ethan Rieker helped Susquehanna to a split of a Landmark doubleheader with Scranton with a big offensive performance. He had five hits in the two games, including a two-run home run in extra innings of game two that provided Susquehanna with the winning margin. He was 5-for-8 over the two games, with two RBI and two runs scored, while adding a double to go with his home run.

Pitcher of the Week:
Moravian’s Brendan Close claims the honor for the third-straight week after another strong outing in Landmark play. The junior allowed only one run on five hits over eight innings of work in a win over USMMA, helping Moravian sweep the three-game series. He fanned 10 hitters and walked none to improve to 6-0 on the year. He has struck out 55 hitters while walking only three in 42 innings of work.

Men's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week:
Mike Rufo matched his best goal production of his career as Scranton opened Landmark play with a win over USMMA. The junior matched his career high with five goals, while taking only six shots for the Royals in the match. He also contributed a ground ball. Earlier in the week he scored twice on four shots in a non-conference match against Franklin & Marshall.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Patrick Cefalu was an all-around force for Scranton as the Royals earned a win in their Landmark opener. The senior won 26 of 32 faceoff attempts for an 81-percent success rate as Scranton topped USMMA. The senior also collected 20 ground balls in the win, the highest total in the conference this season, and chipped in offensively with a goal and an assist. He had four ground balls and eight faceoff wins in a non-conference match with Franklin & Marshall earlier in the week.

Women's Lacrosse
Offensive Player of the Week:
Catholic’s Mary Swarthout was a strong offensive contributor for the Cardinals this week. She scored the game-winning goal in a victory over 17th-ranked Mary Washington, one of five goals she scored in the game while also passing out two assists. She erupted for six goals with three assists in a one-goal loss to 12th-ranked Middlebury, and then passed out one assist as Catholic got past Landmark foe Drew by one goal. She also contributed 11 ground balls, eight draw controls and three caused turnovers over the three matches.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Midfielder Kate Robinson was a key performer defensively and offensively in a 2-1 week for Catholic. The senior had three caused turnovers, including one with 15 seconds remaining to preserve a 10-9 Catholic win in the team’s Landmark opener against Drew. She also had two ground balls in the match. In a one-goal loss to 12th-ranked Middlebury she produced a pair of ground balls and one draw control, and in a win over 17th-ranked Mary Washington she had five draw controls, four caused turnovers and a ground ball. Offensively she also scored eight goals and passed out four assists over the three matches.

Softball
Player of the Week:
Annie Zeleniak was a terror at the plate as Scranton swept three doubleheaders including a Landmark twinbill with USMMA. The senior hit .682 over the six games, with three home runs, six doubles and 21 RBI. She closed the week with six hits in seven at-bats with a double and three home runs in the doubleheader against USMMA. She drove in 12 runs and scored seven in the two-game series. She hit safely in all six games including four three-hit games and scored nine runs to go along with her 21 RBI.

Pitcher of the Week:
Moravian’s Jenna Carmon was dominant in a perfect 6-0 week for the Greyhounds. The junior was 3-0, tossing 19 innings of work without allowing an earned run. She posted a complete-game shutout while striking out seven, walking one and scattering six hits in a shutout over Landmark foe Drew. She allowed two hits and no runs in a win over Albright, and then gave up a pair of unearned runs on six hits while striking out five in a win over Hunter. She fanned 14 hitters in 19 innings while walking only one over the three starts and did not allow an extra base hit.

Men's Tennis:
Scranton’s Carl Caceres was a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles play as the Royals opened Landmark competition with a pair of victories. He claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at his third singles position in a 6-2 Scranton win over Catholic, and then was a perfect 6-0, 6-0 at third singles as Scranton blanked Juniata 9-0. He won at second doubles against Juniata 8-0 with teammate Joe Morra and claimed an 8-5 doubles win with Morra against Catholic.

Women's Tennis:
Sarit Ashkenazi earned two key points as Drew topped Juniata by a 6-3 score to claim its first Landmark win of the season. The senior posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles in the match, her third-straight singles win, and also teamed with Christina Thoma for an 8-2 win at the first doubles position.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Field:
Susquehanna’s Ken Schetroma continued his strong season with two victories at the Juniata quad meet. The sophomore posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 15.67 meters in the shot put, tying the Landmark overall record in the event, and setting a new conference and Susquehanna outdoor record. He also won the hammer throw with a toss of 42.28-meters, narrowly missing setting another career best.

Track:
Moravian’s Kyle D’Angelo opened the outdoor season with two strong finishes in the sprints. The junior placed third in the 200-meter dash at the Lafayette 9-Way Meet, running an ECAC qualifying time of 22.24. He also placed 13th in the 100 by running 11.47. His 200 time is the fastest in the Landmark in the outdoor season, while his 100 time is tied for third best.

Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Field:
Micah Leonard got her outdoor season off to a strong start for Moravian at the Lafayette College 9-Way Meet. The sophomore placed fourth in both the long jump and the triple jump at the meet, recording ECAC Championship qualifying distances in both events and producing the top efforts in the Landmark outdoor season. She jumped 5.42 meters in the long jump and went 10.88 meters in the triple jump.

Track:
Rachel Won did a bit of everything to help Catholic enjoy a strong day at the York Green & White Invitational. The senior placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.75, and then was third in the 400-hurdles by running 1:13.44. She ran the anchor leg on Catholic’s 4x100 relay team that placed fourth, and was the second leg on the second-place 4x400 relay. She also placed third in the javelin off the track.
