Landmark Athletes Pick Up Academic Honors
MADISON, N.J. - A pair of Landmark Conference athletes from
spring sports have earned places on ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District Teams. University of Scranton sophomore Justin
Champagne was a first-team selection for the academic all-district
baseball team, while Moravian jnuior Erica Klepeisz was a
third-team choice in softball.
Champagne, who holds a 3.87 grade point average in economics,
started 27 games at third-base and led the Royals with a .453
batting average. He had 43 hits, including three home runs, a
triple and eight doubles, and finished the season with a .653
slugging percentage and on-base percentage of .509. As a pitcher,
he was 5-3, with a 5.40 ERA and a team-high 39 strikeouts. He
finished the season sixth in strikeouts, ninth in ERA and 10th in
innings pitched (50) in the Landmark Conference. As a first-team
selection he is now eligible for the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-America Team.
The Royals set a new school-record with 26 victories this past
season under seventh-year head coach Mike Bartoletti. Scranton also
advanced to the championship game of the Landmark Conference
tournament last Sunday, May 9, at Juniata College in Huntingdon,
Pennsylvania, before ending its season with a loss to Catholic
University.
Klepeisz, who has a 3.57 GPA and is majoring in elementary
education and history, started in centerfield for the Greyhounds
and was named to the Landmark All-Conference First Team. Klepeisz
added 39 hits, 29 runs, eight doubles, three triples, a .345
average, a team leading six stolen bases and 23 RBIs.
The Greyhounds posted a 33-6 overall record this spring, the 15th
consecutive season that Moravian has won at least 23 games, and a
perfect 12-0 mark in the inaugural Landmark Conference season. The
Greyhounds made the postseason for the 14th consecutive season and
win the 2008 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament.
In order to qualify, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, have a
cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, and be a starter or
key reserve. District II is comprised of all non-NCAA Division I
student-athletes from the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
With the two selections, the Landmark has now placed 10
student-athletes on Academic All-District Teams in its first year
of existence.
