Nine Student-Athletes Picked As Players of the Week

MADISON, N.J. - After crowning Landmark Champions in four fall sports this past weekend, a total of nine student-athletes have been recognized as Landmark Conference Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.

Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:

Sophomore Paula Price handled all of the scoring as Juniata earned a 2-1 victory over Catholic to claim the 2008 Landmark Field Hockey Championship. Price scored Juniata’s first goal of the match just minutes before halftime, to knot the score at one. She then gave the Eagles the win with a game-winning goal in the 95th minute of the contest and five minutes into the second overtime period. It was the second multi-goal match of the year for Price.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Juniata goalie Abby Funk played a pair of strong games as the Eagles earned their second-straight Landmark title. In the championship match she recorded seven saves and conceded just one goal in 94 minutes of action. In the semifinals she had a pair of saves in a 2-1 Juniata win. For the week she notched a 0.85 goals against average, with a .818 save percentage.

Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Senior midfielder Matt Gawlas scored the only goal of the match as Susquehanna topped Catholic 1-0 to earn the Landmark Men’s Soccer Championship. Gawlas found the back of the net in the 33rd minute to provide the only scoring in the championship match. He also was a strong offensive and defensive presence in the midfield in the semifinal victory over Scranton.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Sophomore goalkeeper B.J. Merriam was strong in net in both postseason contests as Susquehanna earned the Landmark Men’s Soccer Championship. Merriam stopped two shots, including one on a direct kick with just 31 seconds remaining to earn the shutout in the championship match. In the semifinals he allowed just one goal and made three saves in 93 minutes as Susquehanna outlasted Scranton in overtime.

Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Freshman Arielle Caldas scored two goals, including the lone goal in the championship match, as Moravian earned the Landmark Women’s Soccer Championship. She broke a scoreless tie with a goal just three minutes before the end of the second overtime to give Moravian a 1-0 win in the championship match. She also scored one of Moravian’s two goals in the team’s 2-0 semifinal win over Juniata.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Freshman defender Diana Feldman helped Moravian claim its first-ever conference championship with a pair of shutout wins. Feldman was on the field for all 198 minutes of play in the semifinals and finals as the Greyhounds blanked Juniata 2-0 in the semifinals, and defeated Catholic 1-0 in double-overtime in the championship. She helped lead a defense that has not allowed a goal in its last 313 minutes of game action.

Men's Swimming & Diving:
Catholic senior Reik Foust won a pair of individual events and earned a relay win as Catholic swept a tri-meet with St. Mary’s and Hood this past weekend. He touched the wall first in the 50 free with a mark of 22.69 and then swam 50.02 to win the 100 freestyle. He was the anchor of the winning 200 freestyle relay that posted a time of 1:32.60.

Women's Swimming & Diving
Scranton senior Erin O’Connor won a pair of events for the Royals in a dual-meet against Dickinson this past weekend. O’Connor was victorious in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:21,84, and then got to the wall first in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:31.07.

Volleyball:
Juniata senior setter Beth Kozak played a pair of strong matches in helping Juniata win its 28th-consecutive conference championship. The senior passed out 22 assists in the 3-0 championship-match win over Susquehanna, while helping the Eagles hit .337 as a team. She also had a pair of aces and four digs in the contest. In a semifinal win over Moravian she passed out 19 assists in a 3-0 Juniata sweep.
