Landmark Recognizes 14 Players of the Week

MADISON, N.J. - With one Landmark sport holding its Championship and the remaining spring sports concluding Landmark regular-season competition, a total of 14 student-athletes have been chosen as Landmark Players of the Week. The Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark office.
Baseball Player:
USMMA senior David May helped the Mariners clinch the first
postseason berth in program history with several strong
performances. He went 5-for-5 at the plate in the first game of a
doubleheader with Scranton, and finished the week with a .500
batting average knocking out nine hits in 18 at-bats. He added a
home run, and nine RBI to go with his nine hits, and scored four
runs while also stealing a pair of bases.
Baseball Pitcher:
Moravian freshman Brendan Close helped the Greyhounds lock up the
second-seed for the Landmark postseason with a complete-game win
over Juniata. He allowed just three hits and one run over seven
innings while striking out six, which gave him 71 Ks for the
season, setting a new Moravian single-season record. He took a
no-hitter into the sixth inning in the contest.
Men's Field:
Moravian senior Blair Maginnis won three field events and
was named the Male Field Athlete of the Year at the Landmark
Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He placed first in the
discus on day one (42.57-meters) then won the shot put
(15.28-meters) and the hammer throw (48.82) meters on the second
day of competition. All three throws earned ECAC qualifying status.
Women's Field:
Catholic freshman Kelly Carioto enjoyed a memorable first
Landmark Outdoor Track & Field Championship as she was named
the Female Field Athlete of the Year. She earned a victory in the
shot put with a best toss of 12.09-meters and then was the
runner-up in the discus with a best effort of 35.75 meters.
Men's Lacrosse Offense:
Junior attack Jon Bucknam had a hand in 13 of
Drew’s 17 goals over the week as the team picked up a pair of
wins. In a season-ending victory over Scranton he found the back of
the net himself twice and collected five assists in the Ranger win.
Earlier in the week he did the goal scoring as he tallied five
times and added an assist in a 7-5 Drew win over Swarthmore. He
finished the week with seven goals and six assists.
Men's Lacrosse Defense:
Drew goalkeeper Michael Celentano turned in a pair of
stellar performances in a 2-0 week for the Rangers. In the
team’s regular-season finale he posted 12 saves as Drew
blanked Scranton for the team’s first shutout since the 1994
season. Earlier in the week he made 15 saves while allowing just
five goals in a non-conference win over Swarthmore. For the week he
boasted a 2.50 goals against average and a .844 save percentage.
Women's Lacrosse Offense:
Susquehanna’s Sarah Wright erupted offensively as
the Crusaders closed the regular season with a win over Moravian.
Wright found the back of the net eight times, and added another two
assists to collect 10 points in the win. She also contributed five
draw controls in the win.
Women's Lacrosse Defense:
Drew goalkeeper Rachel Hanley earns the honor for the
second-straight week after turning in one of the best performances
of her career in a win over Landmark foe Catholic. She stopped 21
shots in helping to hold off 10th-ranked Catholic to just eight
goals, with 15 of those saves coming in the second half as the
Cardinals tried to rally from an early deficit.
Softball Player:
Moravian outfielder Amanda Paulus helped the Greyhounds
close out the regular season with four victories as she provided
big offensive output. She hit .692 for the week with nine hits in
13 at-bats. She had at least two hits in all four games, including
a total of five in the team’s Landmark doubleheader wins
against Drew. She also scored a pair of runs in both Drew games,
and drove in three runs in the finale as she belted a pair of home
runs. She finished the week with three RBI and six runs scored.
Softball Pitcher:
Susquehanna hurler Cara Swerdlow picked up a pair of
victories for the Crusaders. She tossed 18 innings for the week,
including a pair of complete-game victories and allowed just one
earned run for an ERA of 0.39. She tossed a complete-game four
hitter in a win over Landmark foe USMMA, while striking out 13. She
fanned 27 hitters over 18 innings for the week, and surrendered
just 11 hits.
Men's Tennis:
Moravian freshman Kevin Holze picked up a pair of singles
victories in two Landmark wins for the Greyhounds. He moved up to
second singles due to injury and still earned a pair of singles
wins. He went to three sets in a win over Scranton, and then
captured a straight-set wins in a victory over Juniata. The singles
win gave him 20 for the year, which establishes a new school
record. He also teamed up to earn a doubles win at second doubles
in the Scranton.
Women's Tennis:
Sophomore Kerry McKinley enjoyed a perfect 4-0 week as
Moravian concluded the regular season with a pair of victories and
clinched the number-one seed in the Landmark postseason. She earned
a win at 4th singles against Juniata in straight sets, and then
teamed for a win at 3rd doubles. She had victories at the same
positions earlier in the week as the Greyhounds pulled out a 5-4
non-conference win over Ursinus.
Men's Track:
Sophomore Eric Woodruff was awarded Track Athlete of the
Year honors for his performance for Moravian at the Landmark
Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He won the 200-meter dash in
an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 21.23, also breaking a school
and Landmark record. He added another school and Landmark record
when he won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.59, which was an
NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Women's Track:
Alycia Woodruff of Susquehanna posted three individual
event victories en route to being named the Femake Track Athlete of
the Year at the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The sophomore won the 1,500 on the opening day of the meet in a
time of 4:47.31. She then added a win in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase in a time of 11:46.56 and the 5,000-meter with a time
of 18:51.27.
