Landmark Names Players of the Week

MADISON, N.J. - Following the kickoff of the 2008-09 athletic year, the Landmark Conference has selected nine student-athletes as Landmark Players of the Week. The selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.

Men's Cross Country:
Susquehanna junior Paul Thistle placed second overall among a field of Division I and Division II runners at the Bucknell Invitational. Thistle covered the four mile course in a time of 19:58 (4:59 per mile) to help Susquehanna finish third among four teams at the meet. Thistle was just six seconds back of the winner, the top runner for Division I Bucknell.

Women's Cross Country:
Susquehanna’s Alycia Woodruff was the top finisher for the Crusaders at the Bucknell Invitational as she helped her team place third out of four teams at the meet. Competing against a pair of Division I schools, and a Division II school she crossed the line in 11th place and ran a time of 18:05 over the three-mile course. Her time was more than one minute faster than she ran on the same course last season.

Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:

Drew junior forward Elizabeth Law scored all three of Drew’s goals to help the Rangers earn a split in their opening weekend. Law found the back of the cage three times in a 3-1 victory over Roanoke. She also helped preserve the lead with a defensive save late in the contest. Law was also Drew’s top offensive threat in their season-opening set-back to Cabrini as she fired off eight shots and forced five saves.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Juniata goalkeeper Abby Funk conceded just one goal over two matches as Juniata opened the season 1-1. The senior stopped a total of 10 shots while playing 118 minutes in goal. She did not allow a goal in 32 minutes of action in Juniata’s opener and then allowed the only goal of the weekend in double overtime of her team’s second game. Her goals against average over the weekend was 0.59

Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Sophomore Kevin Duffy had a hand in two game-winning goals to help Catholic win the Randolph-Macon Tournament. He scored twice, including the game-winner in the 93rd minute as Catholic claimed the tournament title with a win over Randolph. On the first day of the tourney he assisted on the game-winning goal as Catholic topped Randolph-Macon 2-1.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Sophomore back Curtis Fornarotto played a key role in helping Drew win the Ranger Fall Festival. Making his collegiate debut he was named the Festival Defensive MVP. He helped the Drew defense hold Mount Saint Vincent without a shot in the opener as he played all 90 minutes, and then was a key contributor as Drew topped Manhattanville in overtime. He made a critical tackle late in the game against Manhattanville to thwart a breakaway and give the Rangers a chance to score the game winner.

Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Sophomore Sisley Pumilia helped Goucher get their season off to a fast start as the Gophers routed Wilson 10-0. She scored the first two goals of the game, and then added one more tally before halftime to give her the hat trick. She also picked up three assists in the contest, giving her an impressive nine points as she had a part in six of Goucher’s 10 goals.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Drew senior goalkeeper Anna Mularz played a major role as Drew won the Lady Cyclone Classic at Centenary. Both Rangers games were decided in overtime as Mularz conceded just one goal in 206 minutes of action. She stopped four shots and posted a shutout in Drew’s victory over Greensboro, and then recorded 10 saves as the Rangers posted a 1-1 tie with Centenary. Her goals against average for the tournament was 0.44.

Volleyball:
Sophomore Lindsey Jankiewicz helped Susquehanna get off to a strong start in 2008 as the Crusaders went 3-1 at the Haverford Invitational. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the event as she piled up 55 kills, 10 digs, eight blocks and seven serve aces over the four matches. Her top match came against Cabrini as she knocked out a match-high 25 kills to go along with five aces.
