Landmark Commissioner Announces Plans To Retire

Landmark Commissioner Announces Plans To Retire

MADISON, N.J. – Landmark Conference Commissioner John A. Reeves has announced he will retire from his position at the end of his current contract which concludes June 30, 2012. Reeves became the first, and only, commissioner in the history of the Division III athletics conference when he was hired in September 2006.

Reeves, a 48-year veteran of college athletics, was retired for two years after spending his previous 14 years as the director of physical education and intercollegiate athletics at Columbia University, and was called out of retirement by the Landmark Conference. The conference's members selected Reeves following an intensive nationwide search for a leader with the experience and enthusiasm necessary to shape the nascent conference and help it attain its goal of integrating the educational and athletic experience. He originally agreed to a three-year commitment as commissioner, but then elected to continue his service an additional three years after consultation with the eight Landmark chief executive officers.

"Five years ago, John Reeves provided the administration and organization to help establish a conference of seven like-minded colleges and universities, in which scholarship and athleticism go hand in hand," said Sanford J. Ungar, president of Goucher College and chair of the Landmark Conference executive board. "Thanks to his leadership, the league's student-athletes have been afforded opportunities to succeed at games, matches, and meets, as well as in the classroom. We are all extremely indebted to Dr. Reeves for his commitment to demonstrating the important role athletics plays as part of the undergraduate experience."

"We are grateful for the strong leadership that John has provided the Landmark Conference throughout the past five years," said Pam Samuelson, Director of Athletics at Susquehanna University and chair of the Landmark Conference Athletics Directors Committee. "His extensive experience has been invaluable to the growth and development of the league. John's commitment to the student-athlete, strong desire for collaboration, and unwavering integrity has been at the forefront of his administration. He has been a model not only for how we conduct our business on a regular basis, but also how we relate as colleagues."

In the five-plus years since his appointment, Reeves has overseen the launch of competition within the conference and the crowning of 72 Landmark champions. Fifty-three Landmark teams have competed in NCAA Tournaments since competition began in the fall of 2007, despite a two-year waiting period before the conference earned NCAA automatic bids. Landmark student-athletes and teams have claimed such honors as NCAA national champions, NCAA tournament finalists, Capital One academic all-Americans, and Division III players of the year.

Reeves has also provided a critical link among the presidents, academic leaders, athletic administrators, and coaches of the Landmark Conference. He has overseen all of the conference's sports programs for men and women, including championships and special events. Among the unique endeavors was the organization and implementation of a trio of Landmark Collaboration Institutes held in Washington, D.C. that brought together constituents from each institution to work towards conference-wide goals, including the Landmark vision of athletic and academic collaboration, branding a Landmark Conference identity, and furthering the conference emphasis on sportsmanship.

A national search for the next Landmark Conference commissioner will begin soon, with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2012. Information about the commissioner search will be found on the Landmark Conference website, www.landmarkconference.org.

The members of the Landmark Conference are The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.; Drew University in Madison, N.J.; Goucher College in Baltimore, Md.; Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa.; Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.; The University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa.; Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, N.Y.
