Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. –The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

In men’s basketball action, Goucher provided the biggest upset of the week, defeating Scranton 81-73 Saturday afternoon. The win marked the first time in program history that the Gophers has defeated the Royals. Catholic remains the only undefeated team in the conference with wins over Elizabethtown and Moravian.

There only remains two undefeated teams on the women’s side after nationally-ranked Scranton won 66-53 against Susquehanna and a 76-48 win at Goucher. Scranton extended their regular season winning streak to 49 games in the victory, 28 of those coming in Landmark Conference play. Catholic earned two wins to move to 4-0 in the conference with a 66-61 win against Elizabethtown and 83-67 win against Moravian.

There were five meets between Landmark swimming and diving teams in the pool over the weekend. Marywood traveled to Goucher on Saturday where the Pacers swept the Gophers in the only Landmark meet of the week. Eight schools will be in action this week as the countdown continues towards the start of the Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 17.

Indoor track & field season was back in action over the weekend with one school competing. Elizabethtown competed at the Coach I Open.

Athlete of the Week - Jay Howard, Catholic

Howard led the Cardinals to a perfect, 2-0, week including in a thrilling overtime victory against Moravian as Catholic is the only unbeaten team left in the Landmark at 4-0. Against Morvian, Howard finished the game with a team-high 26 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. He also added three assists and a steal and went 10-of-18 from the field. Against E-Town, Howard led all scorers 18 points on 5-of-6 attempts from the field and eight free throws. He added game-high seven rebounds to go along with two steals, two assists and a block.

Athlete of the Week - Bridgette Mann, Scranton

Mann matched a career-high with 25 points against Susquehanna on Wednesday, as the game-high spurned the Lady Royals to a 13-point victory in a game they trailed by three at halftime. She added 12 more points at Goucher on Saturday in a game that Scranton never trailed in, marking the 13th time in 15 games that she has scored in double-figures for the year.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Bill Crumrine, Susquehanna

Men's Athlete of the Week - Bill Crumrine, Susquehanna

Crumrine won both distance events with victories in the 1000 free (10:17.32) and the 500 free (4:58.43 - winning by just .33 seconds). He was also a member of the second place 400 free relay as Susquehanna was out touched at the wall by .04 seconds.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Virginia Cobb, Marywood

In a meet at Goucher Saturday (win, 162-89), Virginia won four total events in a win over Goucher College (three individual and one relay.) She was victorious in the 50 free (25.99), 200 free (2:03.85), and the 500 free (5:36.34). She also led off the winning 200 free relay with a 25.99 split.

Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Mitch Schlegel, Elizabethtown

Junior Mitch Schlegel won the 60m dash with the second-fastest time in E-town program history of 7.21, then placed fifth in the 400m at 53.44. Also ran a leg of the second-place 4x400m relay that turned in a 3:35.79.

Freshman Nathan Ulrich placed fourth in the high jump to tie for the best finish among E-town's field athletes at 1.78m (5'10") and took fifth in the triple jump at 11.92m (39'1-1/4") to move from tenth to eighth all-time.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week - Kesley Detweiler, Elizabethtown

Senior Kesley Detweiler won two individual events and was a part of the winning 4x400-meter relay team. Ran 8.21 in the 60m final for first and beat out several runners off the final turn to run 27.58 in the 200m. Took the second leg of the 4x400 and helped the Jays run 4:12.15.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week - Alexa Feduchak, Elizabethtown

Junior Alexa Feduchak had a pair of top ten finishes at Franklin & Marshall, including the best throw of the weight throw competition at 13.48m (44'2"), which improved her second-place standing on E-town's all-time list. She was eighth in the shot put at 10.28m, the ninth-best throw in E-town history.
