Moravian Slugs Past USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Greyhounds won their first Landmark Conference game of the 2008 season, defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 13-9, in a game shortened due to darkness to open the three-game Landmark Conference series. Even though Moravian had a 15-9 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, NCAA rules dictate that the game revert back to the end of the seventh inning and no statistics count from the seventh since the Mariners were unable to complete their at-bat before darkness forced the umpires to call the game.
Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior outfielder Eric Shea drew walk to lead off the game and stole second base. Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino would reach on an error with one out but was thrown out on the play as Shea scored. Junior first baseman Joseph Durso then connected on a solo home run to right center field, his first homer of the season.
U.S. Merchant Marine would tie the game with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Mike Bybee would hit an RBI single up the middle for the Mariners while Brandon Scott hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score the other run.
The Greyhounds would retake a two-run lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine reached on an error to lead off the inning and eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior second baseman Brett Stout. Shea would then reach on an error by the Mariners that allowed freshman third baseman Jake Schweitzer to score. Schweitzer had singled through the right side earlier in the inning.
Again, U.S. Merchant Marine tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the second inning with two more runs with Bybee driving in both runs with a two-RBI double.
Moravian took the lead for good with five runs in the top of the third inning to build a 9-4 lead. Gambrino and Durso both walked to lead off the inning and wild pitches would put them at second and third. Junior outfielder Josh Hinkle hit a two-RBI double to left field to score Gambrino and Durso, and Hinkle would move to third on another wild pitch. Hinkle eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Schweitzer that also moved Bodine, who had walked and stolen second base, to third. Junior catcher Thomas Czarnecki then followed with an RBI single down the left field line to score Bodine, and Czarnecki would cross the plate on an RBI single up the middle by Shea.
The Greyhounds would add another run in the top of the fifth inning for a 10-4 lead. Schweitzer would lead off the inning by reaching on a U.S. Merchant Marine error and then move to second on a ground out by Czarnecki. After a wild pitch moved Schweitzer to third base, he scored on an RBI single up the middle by Shea.
The Mariners would cut the Moravian lead to 10-6 with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Dylan Tumblin had an RBI double while Alex Wolfe added an RBI single for U.S. Merchant Marine.
Moravian pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning to take a 13-6 lead. Durso singled up the middle to lead off the inning, and Bodine singled with one out to put a pair of runners on base. Schweitzer then singled up the middle and an error in the Mariner outfield allowed all three Greyhounds to score.
U.S. Merchant Marine would get the three runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning cutting the Greyhound advantage back to 13-9, which ended up being the final score. Bybee had an RBI single for the Mariners while the other two runs scored on a Moravian error on a ball hit by Brandon Scott.
The Greyhounds did score two runs in the top of the seventh inning; however, since U.S. Merchant Marine did not complete the bottom half of the inning before the umpires called the game for darkness at 7:10 p.m., NCAA rules stipulate that the seventh inning doesn't count and the 13-9 score after six innings is the final. The Mariners had the bases loaded with two outs when the game was called.
Moravian had 12 hits in the game with Durso going three-for-three, and Shea, Schweitzer and Stout each collecting two hits. U.S. Merchant Marine had ten hits in the contest with Bybee going three-for-four with four RBIs.
Sophomore Joe Melchionna improved to 4-1 on the mound this season for the Greyhounds, allowing six runs, just two of them earned, on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings of action. Sophomore Zachary Andes tossed one inning for Moravian, allowing three runs, none of them earned, on a hit and a walk with one strikeout.
Nicholas Geier took the loss for the Mariners, giving up eight runs, six of them earned, on three hits and four walks with one strikeout in two-plus innings of action. Eric Anderson tossed four innings for U.S. Merchant Marine, allowing five runs, two of them earned, on nine hits and four walks with one strikeout.
