Hubach Claims First Win In USMMA Triumph

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy
baseball team topped Baruch College, 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon in
Kings Point, NY. Sophomore pitcher Jeff Hubach led the Mariners on
the mound getting his first career win. He went seven complete
innings with six strikeouts and one unearned run. Freshman center
fielder Alex Wolfe helped out the Mariners. He went 1-for-3 with
three runs batted in.
The Mariners got on the board first in the bottom of the first with
five runs. Darin Coleman led off the inning with a double off the
right field fence. Jared Fassnacht then bunted for a single,
putting runners first and second. Mike Bybee hit a fly ball to
right field that was dropped, plating Coleman. Doug Carter singled
to the shortstop to score Fassnacht. Scott singled to center field
to load the bases. With no outs Wolfe double to left field to clear
the bases.
USMMA added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the
score, 7-0. Coleman led off the inning with a single up the middle
and then stole second. Fassnacht single to the left side to put
runners on first and third. Bybee grounded out to first bring in
run. Scott hit a two out double down the right field line to score
the last run of the inning.
The Bearcats got on the board in the top of the sixth. John Reyes
singled through the left single. He then stole second and moved to
third when the ball went into center field on the throw. David
Chestnut brought Reyes into score when he singled to first
base.
USMMA answered in the bottom of the sixth, when Travis Christensen
hit his first home run of the season over the right field
fence.
The Mariners pitching was able to shutout Baruch for the next three
innings to give them an 8-1 victory and snap their 12 game losing
streak.
The Mariners return to action on Thursday, April 10th, when they
will host CCNY. Game time is slated for at 4:00 p.m. at Lower
Roosevelt Field.
