Catholic Repeats As Landmark Baseball Champions

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - After being in the bottom half of the seeding
again this year, The Catholic University baseball came from behind
and won its second straight Landmark Conference title today,
defeating Merchant Marine, 11-3.
Led by the offensive power of Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's
Abbey), who finished the day 4-5 with five RBIs, a double and a
homerun, the Cardinals defeated Merchant Marine to defend their
Landmark Conference crown.
The Cardinals opened the game up early with a run in the first, but
it was back to back four run innings in the fourth and fifth that
put the game away. Merchant Marine didn't get on the board until
the sixth inning when they scored after the only CUA error of the
contest.
Joe Devine (Medford Lakes/Shawnee), Mike Goodman
(Brookville/Sherwood), and Pat Quintana (Denver/Littleton) all
recorded multi-hit games, with Devine recording a double and a
triple.
Defensively for the Cards, Andy Moldawer (Gaithersburg/Quince
Orchard) went five innings scattering five Merchant Marine hits,
and allowing no runs. The staff combined to allow only nine hits,
and two earned runs.
CUA will now have to await the NCAA and ECAC annoucements to find
out if the Cardinals will make a postseason appearance. CUA is
currently 22-20.
