Field Hockey Tournament Seeding Announced
TOWSON, Md. – At the conclusion of the regular season, the seeding for the field hockey tournament has been determined. The 2012 Landmark Field Hockey Tournament consists of the top four teams. Semifinals will take place Wednesday, Oct. 31 and the winners advance to the championship Saturday, Nov. 3.
In a rare turn of events, three teams were 3-0 after the first three weeks of conference play and all clinched spots in the playoffs. Catholic, Drew and Scranton separated themselves from the pack and the final spot came down to the last week of the regular season when Moravian took on Susquehanna.
Catholic clinched the No. 1 spot after Juniata defeated Scranton in the final game of the regular season. The Cardinals finished conference play 5-1 and return to the playoffs as the Landmark defending champions. They are three-time runners-up will look to repeat as champions.
Drew and Scranton tied with identical records of 4-2. Head-to-Head, Drew defeated Scranton, therefore Drew is the No. 2 seed, Scranton the No. 3 seed. The Rangers were runner-up a year ago and have made playoff appearances every year except 2008. Scranton makes their third appearance in the tournament, falling in the semifinals in both 2008 and 2011. The Royals dealt Catholic their only Landmark loss this season.
Susquehanna locked up the fourth seed on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Moravian. Susquehanna and Juniata tied with identical records of 3-3. Head-to-Head, Susquehanna defeated Juniata, therefore Susquehanna is the No. 4 seed, Juniata finishes No. 5. The Crusaders return to the playoffs after missing out last season on a tiebreaker.
In the first semifinal match-up, top seeded Catholic will take on No. 4 Susquehanna. The last time the two teams met, Catholic earned the 3-2 win. The Cardinals got on the board quickly with a goal in the second minute, but the Crusaders responded with the equalizer in the 32nd minute. Catholic took a 2-1 lead just before halftime and led 3-1 with a goal in the 63rd minute. The Crusaders cut the lead to one in the 65th minute, but Catholic held on for the win. The Cardinals have won the last three meetings, but Susquehanna earned a 4-2 win in overtime during the 2010 season.
In the second semifinal match-up, No. 3 Scranton will travel to No. 2 Drew. Earlier this season, Drew earned the 4-1 win over the Royals. The Rangers scored three goals in 19 minutes to lead 3-0 before Scranton got on the board in the 30th minute. Drew added an insurance goal in the second half to win 4-1. Drew has won the last two meetings including a 2-1 victory in one of the 2011 Landmark Conference semifinal match-ups, but Scranton earned the 3-0 win during the 2011 regular season.
The winners of the two semifinals will face off in the Landmark Championship Saturday, Nov. 3 at the highest remaining seed.
