2016-17 Basketball Athletes of the Week

  • Athlete of the Week - John Vitkus, Scranton
    February 20, 2017
    (Sr, C - Mahopac, N.Y.) Vitkus capped the regular season with two more dominant performances as the Royals secured the top seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs. He began the week by matching his career high with 24 points while pulling down 10 rebounds in a 75-66 victory over 15th-ranked Susquehanna on Wednesday night. He went 9-for-15 from the field and 6-for-10 from the line, and added two assists, a block and a steal. Three days later, he had 21 points and 11 rebounds in an 85-70 win over Goucher on Senior Day in the Long Center. He finished that game 6-for-9 from the field and 9-for-13 from the line, and added a block, a steal and an assist.
  • Athlete of the Week - Steven Weidlich, Susquehanna
    February 13, 2017
    (Sr, G - Watchung, N.J.) Susquehanna senior Steven Weidlich averaged 26.5 points per game last week while averaging five rebounds. Against Catholic, Weidlich scored 25 points in teh 88-64 win while dishing out six assists. He shot 54 percent from the field on 10-of-17 shooting. In the 85-74 win against Drew, the senior scord the first 11 points of the game for Susquehanna on his way to totaling 28. He shot 50 percent from the field and was 8-of-15 from the three-point line.
  • Athlete of the Week - John Vitkus, Scranton
    February 06, 2017
    (Sr, C - Mahopac, N.Y.) Vitkus started the week by scoring 23 points and pulling down eight rebounds in a key 69-61 win at Moravian on Wednesday. He went 9-for-12 from the field and added three blocks, two assists and a steal in 32 minutes. On Saturday, he had 13 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes in a 64-61 road win at Juniata. He finished that victory 5-for-7 from the field and added two blocks and a steal. For the week, he averaged 18.0 points while shooting 73.7 percent from the field, and added 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals.
  • Athlete of the Week - Jimmy Murray, Moravian
    January 30, 2017
    (So, G - Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) Murray helped the Greyhounds to a 2-0 week in Landmark Conference action by averaging 17.5 points per game. Murray connected on 13-of-21 shots from the field (61.9 percent), and he was 8-for-12 (66.7 percent) beyond the three-point line to go with three assists, three blocked shots and two steals for the week. Murray had 14 points, a steal and a blocked shots in an 84-69 win over Goucher College to begin the week. He then shot 8-of-12 including 4-of-5 on three-pointers for 21 points in the Greyhounds' 80-77 win over No. 11 Susquehanna University, the program's first win over a ranked team since December 2001. Murray added three assists, two blocked shots and a steal in the victory while playing 32 minutes.
  • Athlete of the Week - Brandon McGuire, Moravian
    January 23, 2017
    (Sr, F - Philadelphia, Pa.) McGuire helped the Greyhounds to a 2-0 record in Landmark Conference action by averaging 19.5 points and 8.5 rebounds last week. McGuire was 16-for-21 from the field (76.2 percent), 6-of-7 beyond the three-point line (85.7 percent) and made his only free throw attempt while adding four assists, six steals and two blocked shots in 71 minutes of action.
  • Athlete of the Week - Jay Howard, Catholic
    January 16, 2017
    (Jr., F - Pennsuaken, N.J.) Howard led the Cardinals to a perfect, 2-0, week including in a thrilling overtime victory against Moravian as Catholic is the only unbeaten team left in the Landmark at 4-0. Against Morvian, Howard finished the game with a team-high 26 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. He also added three assists and a steal and went 10-of-18 from the field. Against E-Town, Howard led all scorers 18 points on 5-of-6 attempts from the field and eight free throws. He added game-high seven rebounds to go along with two steals, two assists and a block.
  • Athlete of the Week - Steven Weidlich, Susquehanna
    January 09, 2017
    (Sr, G - Watchung, N.J.) Susquehanna senior Steven Weidlich averaged 21 points and 6.3 rebounds to help the River Hawks to a 3-0 week. Weidlich led Susquehanna with 29 points against Lancaster Bible and moved into seventh place on the all-time Susquehanna scoring list. He also finished the week 12 assists and four steals.
  • Athlete of the Week - Andre Mitchell, Catholic
    January 03, 2017
    (So. Conshohocken, Pa.) Catholic won its second-straight CUA Holiday Inn-College Park Classic last week thanks to an impressive performance from sophomore guard Andre Mitchell. The tournament MVP scored a career-high 25 points in the win over Arcadia and followed it up with 24 more in the title-clinching game against Stockton. Mitchell knocked down seven 3-pointers for the week, netting at least three in each game. He also rounded out the stat sheet averaging 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game. He played every minute of both games.
  • Athlete of the Week - Louis Khouri, Catholic
    December 19, 2016
    (Sr., G - Alexandria, Va.) Senior sharpshooter Louis Khouri led Catholic to a perfect 2-0 record last week as the Cardinals are off to their best start in four years with a 7-2 record in 2016. Khouri tied season-highs with 27 points and six 3-pointers in the Cards win over Gettysburg and a double-double with another season-best mark with 10 rebounds. For the week, the Alexandria, Va., native made more than half his shots from both field and from long range with percentages of 59.1 and 56.3, respectively. He averaged 20 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 4.5 3-pointers per game.
  • Athlete of the Week - Brandon McGuire, Moravian
    December 12, 2016
    (Sr, F - Philadelphia, Pa.) McGuire averaged 25.0 points and 11.7 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for the Greyhounds. He shot 73.3 percent from the field (33-of-45), 40 percent beyond the three-point line (4-of-10) and 83.3 percent at the foul line (5-for-6) while averaging 31.0 minutes per game to go with five assists and three steals. McGuire became the 21st player in Moravian history to reach 1,000 career points on a lay-up with 2:05 left in the second half against Bridgewater.
  • Athlete of the Week - Jay Howard, Catholic
    December 05, 2016
    (Jr., F - Pennsauken, N.J.) Junior forward Jay Howard posted an impressive line as Catholic came from behind and erased a four-point deficit with 84 seconds left to defated Drew in its conference opener. Howard assisted on the game-winning 3-pointer and ended the game with a career-high seven helpers. He also added seven rebounds in addition to 24 points for the well-rounded line. Howard got the free throw line 21 times in the contest, knocking down 16 from the charity stripe.
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - John Vitkus, Scranton
    November 28, 2016
    (Sr, C - Mahopac, N.Y.) Vitkus was an unstoppable force in the middle, leading Scranton to a 3-0 week and earning MVP honors as the Royals won twice in the Cross-County Challenge. Vitkus started the week with 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 76-75 win over Cabrini in the Long Center. He also had six blocks and an assist in 34 minutes. Then, he opened the Cross-County Challenge with 23 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in a 79-70 victory over King's on Saturday. A day later, he had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Royals dominated from start to finish in an 88-70 win over Wilkes. For the week, he shot an incredible 25-for-33 (75.8 percent) from the field, including 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) in the two Cross-County Challenge games.
  • Men's Athlete of the Week - Brandon McGuire, Moravian
    November 21, 2016
    (Sr, F - Philadelphia, Pa.) McGuire helped Moravian to a 2-1 record to begin the 2016-17 season, and he was named the MVP of the Ollie Gelston Classic at Montclair State after the Greyhounds went 2-0 in the tournament. McGuire averaged 21.0 points and 14.3 rebounds per game with three double-doubles during the week. He also became the 16th player in Moravian history to reach 500 career rebounds with his first board in a 87-68 win over CCNY on Friday evening.
