Drew Opens Landmark Play With Convincing Win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - So far, so good for the men's lacrosse in Landmark Conference play as Drew defeated Moravian 24-8 in its LC debut. Rob Budziszewski and Mike Sayers each tallied five while Jon Bucknam added three goals and four assists for the Rangers. 14 Rangers registered at least one point in the match as Drew outshined their hosts in every aspect of the game. Drew (2-4) will continue its Landmark campaign by hosting Catholic at Ranger Stadium on Saturday.
The Rangers led 15-3 at the half as they countered the Greyhounds' opener with six of their own. Budziszewski scored three and set up another in the run while Bucknam added two and an assist. Drew was controlling the possession well as Jon Dowiak won seven of the ten face-offs and Drew out groundballed the Greyhounds, 13-9. Mike Sayers had grabbed his first of the season to start Drew's run.
After the turn over to the second period, the Rangers continued to overwhelm Moravian. A 6-0 run that included three from Sayers and Mike DeGiovanni's fourth goal of the season opened the second period. Moravian scored one in the second, but Drew countered with a pair to close out the half at 15-3. Brad Mendelson made nine saves in the half for Drew.
The Rangers won the third 6-4 as Budziszewski picked up his fifth and Sean McNulty his second. Dowiak continued to give Drew possession as he won 17-21 face offs in the game. The fourth period went 3-1 to Drew for the final score as Jeff Sayers picked up a pair of goals and Andrew Schott got his first two collegiate tallies.
The Drew record for most goals scored in a game is 25, accomplished twice: at Widener on 3/28/86 and, coincidentally, at Widener 3/28/90. The last time the Rangers scored 24 goals in a game was on 4/6/98 at Stevens Tech.
