Catholic Falls In NCAA Tournament Opening Round
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- After winning the Landmark Conference title a
week ago, the Catholic men's soccer team fell in the opening round
of the NCAA tournament to Lynchburg College, 3-0 on Saturday.
Despite outshooting their opponents 16-10, the Cardinals failed to
find the back of the net. Matt Brady led the attack with six shots,
including two that sailed just wide and one that struck the
crossbar.
No Hornet took more than one shot in the contest, but Lynchburg
found the back of the net three times including only 35 seconds
after the opening whistle.
Outside of Brady's two attempts on free kicks just outside the box,
CUA's best chance came as Kevin Duffy headed a ball off the post
and then again off of the goalies hands to earn the Cardinals one
of four second half corners.
The Cardinals wrap up the 2009 season with a 16-4-1 record and a
5-1-1 record in conference play. The team earned its first ever
NCAA postseason bid after taking the Landmark Conference title
against Scranton, 3-0.
