Moravian Names Bill Maxwell New Head Men's Tennis Coach
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bill Maxwell has been named the head coach of
the Moravian College men’s tennis team, effective
immediately.
“We are excited to have coach Maxwell join our staff,”
said Moravian College Director of Athletics Paul Moyer. “He
brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. I am
confident that Bill has the ability, knowledge and desire to build
upon our strong men’s tennis tradition well into the future.
Hiring coach Maxwell has also helps us move to our goal of having
dedicated coaches in each of our varsity sport programs which is a
benefit to all of our student athletes.”
Jim Walker, who has served as the head coach of both the Moravian
men’s tennis and men’s basketball programs for the last
29 seasons, is remaining on the Greyhound staff as the head
men’s basketball coach. Coach Walker and Neil Caniga served
as co-head coaches of the men’s tennis program last season,
and coach Caniga was hired as the head men’s and
women’s tennis coach at Roger Williams University this past
August.
Maxwell becomes just the seventh men's tennis coach at Moravian as
the program is set to begin its 62nd season in 2009-10. The
Greyhounds have a 313-352-1 all-time record.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity here at
Moravian,” Maxwell said. “The program has improved over
the last few seasons, and I want to continue that development and
bring a conference championship to Moravian.”
Maxwell has most recently served as the assistant men’s and
women’s tennis coach at NCAA Division I Fairleigh Dickinson
University for the past two years. Maxwell was also the head tennis
professional at the Indian Trail Club, and has served as an
instructor at the Quest Tennis Center and a coach at the Essex Hunt
Club. In 1989, he was a regular practice partner for former world
#1 ranked Tracy Austin as she attempted a comeback to professional
tennis.
Maxwell is a 1989 graduate of Vanderbilt University where he
played on the varsity team. He also has an MBA in finance/strategic
management from Rutgers University Graduate School of
Management.
Maxwell will get right to work with Moravian as the Greyhounds
start the 2009-10 season in Sunday, September 13th at the
Muhlenberg College Invitational. Maxwell inherits a team that is
returning nine letterwinners and all seven of its starters after
its best season in school history last year. Moravian was 13-6 a
year ago and reached the Landmark Conference Championship match for
the first time in school history.
