SCRANTON, Pa. - Juniors Joe Morra (Bronx, NY/Fordham Preparatory) and Mike Pannone (Maplewood, NJ/Seton Hall Preparatory) and sophomore Brian Williams (Madison, NJ/Madison) won two matches apiece to lead The University of Scranton men's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over Juniata College in Landmark Conference action at the Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club.
With the win, the Royals improve to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The loss dropped the Eagles to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Morra and Pannone improved to 8-4 in doubles by turning back Elliott Perow and Tucker Good, 8-1, at one, while Williams teamed with junior Devin Patel (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) to down Matthew Butler and Andrew Hoffman, 8-1, at two. Juniors Bennett Kelley (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) and Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) defeated Brice Morey and Justin Wisniewski, 8-1, at two to complete the sweep.
In singles, Morra picked up his team-leading ninth win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Perow at two, Pannone evened his record at 6-6 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Good at four, and Williams improved to 5-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Max Weiss at six.
Freshman Harry Bonet (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle College High School) remained undefeated in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Butler at five, McGurrin picked up his fifth win of the season and the 25th of his career with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wisniewski at one. Junior Jonathan Russo (Madison, NJ/Madison) is now 5-3 this year and 17-8 in his career after defeating Morey, 6-1, 6-2, at three.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Thursday, April 5, against Catholic University beginning at 12:00 noon at the Royal Courts.
