Scranton Softball Starts Trip In Fine Fashion

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Scranton belted out 22
hits in posting victories over Mitchell College (Conn.), 7-4, and
Gordon College (Mass.), 15-9, in the first two games of an 8-game
Spring Break trip Monday morning.
In the Royals' win over Mitchell, freshman Mia Collarini (Jessup,
Pa./Valley View) had two hits, including a triple, and scored two
runs and sophomore Samantha Russo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan)
chipped in two hits, including a double, and drove in a run to
support winning pitcher Isabel Mendez (Rutherford,
N.J./Rutherford), who struck out seven and scattered five hits.
Sophomore Ashley Regan (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) drove in two runs
with a sacrifice fly during a three-run rally in the third inning
and drove in another run with a single in the bottom of the
fifth.
Freshman Annie Zeleniak (Taylor, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) provided
the fire power in the win over Gordon. She drove in two runs with a
triple in the first inning, knocked in two more with a double in
the second, and had an rbi single in the third as Scranton jumped
out to an early 9-0 lead. Sophomore Nikki Malloy (Shavertown,
Pa./Bishop Hoban) finished with three hits and an rbi and winning
pitcher Kasey Borbidge (Glenolden, Pa./Springfield) and junior
Molly Matyas (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) drove in two runs
apiece.
Borbidge struck out four in picking up her first victory of the
season.
Scranton, now 2-0, will take on Ohio State-Newark and Frostburg
State (Md.) tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.,
respectively.
