Weathers Powers USMMA To Non-Conference Win

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy women’s basketball team defeated St. Joseph’s College this evening 59-52. The Mariners improve to 8-11 on the year while the Golden Eagles fall to 11-9.

USMMA took control from the beginning and took a ten point lead when junior Janay Weathers (Fredericksburg, VA) knocked down a jumper with 6:34 to go in the first half. The Mariners would take a 30-26 lead into the break. Senior Brooke Picillo (Fort Wayne, IN) paced the Mariners with seven points, two rebounds and two assists in the half while Weathers had seven rebounds and six points. Senior Trish McMahon (Patchogue, NY) led the Golden Bears with 12 points, three blocks and two rebounds.

St. Joseph’s fought back and took the lead on a jumper from senior Dana Carney (Patchogue, NY) with 13:48 remaining in the game. The Mariners would regain the lead about a minute later. Again it was Weathers with the layup to give USMMA the lead for good. Weathers finished the game with a career-high 18 rebounds and ten points. Picillo added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals while sophomore Olivia Norris (South Sutton, NH), senior Kiersten Healy (Plainville, CT) and junior Rebecca Grimes (Fairfax, VA) each had nine points and four rebounds on the night. McMahon led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Carney ended the night with 12 points and five rebounds while senior Corissa Stack added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Mariners return to action on Friday, February 5th when they travel to Susquehanna University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
