Stingy Defense Earns Rangers Third Straight Win

MADISON, N.J. -
A pair of early Alyssa Goodman goals set the Rangers up for a 3-0 win over SUNY-Purchase as Drew carried its unbeaten streak to three games. Ann Mularz made three saves in the match to string together her third shutout in a row. Megan Fogarty got Drew's (4-3-2) third goal with a nice long distance effort. Purchase (4-5) got seven saves from keeper Stephanie Janasiewicz.
The Rangers got on the board early as Laura Zeiden crossed to Alyssa Goodman in the center. The sophomore took it off her chest and fired hard over the keeper's head for the goal in the 3rd minute of play.
Goodman got her second of the game just six minutes later thanks to some fine work by Megan Fogarty. Fogarty won a ball 25 yards out and fired hard to the keeper's right. Janasiewicz blocked it away, but Goodman was first to the ball with a striker's instinct for the easy put away.
Caitlin Blake nearly put a third on the board after 15 minutes. She took a lobbed pass and cut back into the middle of the field before firing hard to the far post only to be denied by a great diving save from Janasiewicz. Fogarty followed up a few minutes later with another great shot from distance, but Janasiewicz was up to the task.
Goodman nearly had a first half hat trick in the 33rd minute. Caitlin Blake was the provider this time as she fought through a pair of tackles to send a nice square ball to Goodman. She turned well to get it on her right foot, but fired right at the Purchase keeper. The half ended at 2-0 with the Rangers owning a 12-2 advantage in shots, 4-0 in corners and plenty more possession.
After an uneventful beginning to the second half, the Rangers sprung to life twenty minutes in. Alyssa Goodman nearly created a chance by pestering the keeper into a mistake before Allison McCord and Megan Fogarty both scared the goal from long range.
Megan Fogarty got the Rangers third in the 69th minute. Kerri Hiznay ran down a long ball and played Goodman into the action. Goodman returned to Hiznay who cut back to a wide open Fogarty. The sophomore got a deserved goal with a first timer lofted into the far post's upper 90.
Laura Zeiden's effort in the 80th minute sailed just high after a couple of nifty cut backs in the box to win herself some space. Mularz handled all of her chances cleanly for her third shutout of the season. The Rangers get back into action on Saturday for a big Landmark Conference game against Scranton on Homecoming Weekend.
