Moravian Earns The Chance To Defend Women's Tennis Crown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Top seeded Moravian advanced to the 2009 Landmark Conference Championship match with an 8-1 victory over fourth seed The University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference Semifinal at Hoffman Courts.

The Greyhounds, who are the defending Landmark Conference Champion, will face third seed Goucher College, which upset second seed Juniata College, 5-4, in Wednesday’s other semifinal. Moravian seeking its tenth conference title and will be making its 15th straight conference championship match appearance since 1995. The Greyhounds have also won their last seven matches this spring.

Moravian jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Scranton with a sweep of the doubles action. Freshman Jami Fein and senior Dyana Swan earned an 8-1 win at first doubles while freshmen Melissa Emery and Anna Meola won 8-3 at second doubles. Senior MaryKate Kelly and sophomore Kerry McKinley had an 8-1 win at third doubles.

The Greyhounds then won five of the six singles matches with four victories in straight sets. Fein earn a two-set win at first singles while Kelly won in straight sets at third singles. McKinley tied the school record with her 19th singles win of the year in two sets at fourth singles while Meola had a straight sets win at sixth singles. Freshman Alexandra Hay need three sets for a win at fifth singles while Swan dropped her second singles match in straight sets but forced a tiebreaker in the first set.
