Susquehanna Runs To Landmark Cross Country Championship Titles

Susquehanna Runs To Landmark Cross Country Championship Titles

TOWSON, Md. – On the strength of two very balanced performances the Susquehanna men's and women's cross country teams each claimed their respective titles at the 2010 Landmark Cross Country Championships Saturday on the campus of Goucher College in Towson, Md. The Susquehanna men earned the title for the fourth time in four years while the Crusader women's team claimed its second crown after winning the title in 2008.

Though the Susquehanna men broke a streak of three-consecutive individual winners with David Haklar and Ian Quinlan placing third and fourth respectively the Crusaders placed all five of their scorers in top-14 to earn 38 points for the victory. Juniata College was second with 61 points followed by Moravian College with 70. The University of Scranton produced 100 points to place fourth, host Goucher was fifth with 143 while the United States Merchant Marine Academy earned 165 points for a sixth-place finish. Drew University just edged The Catholic University of America at the seventh and eighth spots with Drew collecting 196 and Catholic finishing with 199.

Moravian's Matthew Lutcza was named Male Outstanding Performer as he just edged out Goucher's Joey Negreann by slightly over three seconds to earn the win while running a course record time on the 8K course. Lutcza ran 26:46.40 while Negreann posted a time of 26:49.80 in the closest finish in the four-year history of the Landmark meet. Ceth Parker and Steve Schmitt of Juniata were fifth and sixth respectively in the race and Drew's Steve Monteleone capped the first-team All-Conference finishes by placing seventh. Susquehanna's Brandon Mash was named Rookie of the Year after his 11th-place finish and Crusaders Head Coach Marty Owens and his staff were voted the Coaching Staff of the Year.

In the women's race Susquehanna's Alycia Woodruff won her third Landmark individual title in four seasons to lead the Crusaders who placed all five runners in the top-20 to collect 51 points and earn their second Landmark Championship. Scranton, the defending champions, had five runners in the top-25 to collect 74 points for a runner-up finish. The scoring was tight at third, fourth, and fifth place with Juniata third with 85 points, Goucher fourth with 87 and Moravian fifth with 92. Catholic produced 101 points to place sixth, USMMA was seventh with 204 and Drew rounded out the proceedings without collecting a team score.

Woodruff broke the course record with a time of 23:04.70 over the 6K course, besting the time she ran when she won the Landmark meet as a freshman in 2007. She was more than 23 seconds ahead of Goucher's Kelsey Myette who collected a second-place finish and was also named the Landmark Rookie of the Year. Cadee Rockwell of Moravian was third, followed by Scranton's Kathleen Druther in fourth and defending individual champion Casey Hess of Susquehanna in fifth. Madeleine Cronan of Catholic and Caroline Morgan of Juniata were sixth and seventh respectively to cap the first-team All-Conference recipients. Owens and the Susquehanna coaching staff were recognized as the Coaching Staff of the Year for the women's competition as well.

Landmark runners will now move on to postseason races either at the ECAC Championships or the NCAA Regionals, held November 13 at various campuses, where they will look to earn high team and individual finishes and hope to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Landmark sent four individual runners to the NCAA Championships last season.
