2012-13 Men's Basketball Players of the Week

 

February 25, 2013  

Shawn Holmes, Catholic (Sr., G, Baltimore, Md.)

Shawn Holmes hit the biggest shot of his career on Saturday night, sinking a floater off the glass with three seconds to play, to lift Catholic to its first Landmark Conference title. Holmes finished with 16 points, including two huge second half 3-pointers, and added four rebounds, two assists and no turnovers in 29 minutes. Holmes sank 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions with under 10 minutes to play, the first of which tied the game, and the second gave CUA a one-point lead. On Wednesday, Holmes struggled with his shooting (3-for-13 for 9 points), but pulled down seven rebounds, handed out three assists and only had one turnover in 40 minutes.

Reed Buck, USMMA (Jr., F, Lawrenceville, Ga.)

Buck averaged 22 points in the Mariners two victories during the week as USMMA completed a late season charge to reach the Landmark Conference Tournament. He was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line and also shot a blistering 46.7 percent from the field. In the Mariners must-win finale Buck scored four straight points in the final two minutes to help Merchant Marine secure the win and the fourth seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament.

Ross Danzig, Scranton (So., G, Clarks Green, Pa.)

Danzig averaged 18 points on 55.6 percent shooting from the field as the Royals locked up a Landmark Conference tournament berth by defeating Drew University and 8th-ranked Catholic University during the week. Danzig has scored in double figures in three straight and seven of his last eight games. He scored all 17 of his points in the first half as the Royals built up a 20-point lead by intermission against Catholic.
   
February 4, 2013  
Shawn Holmes, Catholic (Sr., G, Baltimore, Md.)

Shawn Holmes averaged 20 points on 50 percent shooting as well as 2.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the No. 11 Cardinals. The senior guard netted 16 points in 32 minutes in Wednesday's 62-53 win vs. Juniata, and then scored 24 points on 6 of 11 shooting in 36 minutes in Saturday's win vs. Drew. Holmes added four rebounds and an assist against the Rangers as the Cardinals clinched a berth in the conference tournament.
   
January 28, 2013  
D.J. Strayhorn, Moravian (Sr., G, Swiftwater, Pa.)

Strayhorn helped Moravian post a 1-1 record as he became the 19th player in Moravian history to reach 1,000 career points. Strayhorn reached the milestone with 17 points in a loss at The University of Scranton. Strayhorn then added 25 points in a victory over Goucher College to snap a five-game conference losing streak for the Greyhounds.
   
January 21, 2013  
Chris Kearney, Catholic (Sr., C, Centreville, Va.)

Chris Kearney helped lift No. 11 Catholic to two more conference wins this week over Susquehanna and Scranton, averaging 25.5 points on 64.7 percent shooting, as well as 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. Kearney scored a career-high 32 points on 15 of 24 shooting, and played 39 minutes in CUA's 58-48 win over Scranton on Saturday, snapping the Cards 10-game losing streak against the Royals. Kearney pulled down 12 boards, blocked two shots and recorded a steal. On Wednesday, the senior netted 19 points and grabbed six rebounds, while swatting three shots in an 82-65 win over Susquehanna. Kearney was a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line this week as well.

Reed Buck, USMMA (Jr., F, Lawrenceville, GA)

Buck averaged 30.0 points per game this week as the Mariners went 1-1 in Landmark competition. On Wednesday he tied his season high with 31 points in the 84-78 loss to Scranton. Buck came back and drained 29 points off the bench after not playing the first five minutes of the game against Susquehanna. He added seven rebounds to go along with three assists this week while shooting 52.4 percent from the field.
   
January 7, 2013  
Richard Harris, Goucher (So., G, Clinton, Md.)

Harris helped lead Goucher to a 66-62 win over Moravian on Saturday to keep the Gophers undefeated in Landmark play. He boasted a team-high 22 points on 7-for-17 shooting from the floor to mark his eighth game this season in double figures and third game with 20 points or more. Harris added four rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win without committing a turnover.

Reed Buck, Merchant Marine (Jr., F, Lawrenceville, Ga.)

Reed Buck helped lead the Mariners to a 2-1 record over the last two weeks. He scored a team leading 26 points in a 71-61 win against Dickinson before the holiday. This weekend, Buck dropped in a season high 31 points against Embry-Riddle (ranked #4 in NAIA D-II). He followed up with 15 points against Elmira to average 24.0 points per game in the three contests. He shot 48.1 percent from the field and added 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Brendan Boken, Scranton (Fr., F, South Pasadena, Calif.)

Boken had career highs in points (24) and rebounds (11) in Scranton's 94-93 overtime loss to Keystone College on Saturday. He was 11-for-15 from the field to shoot 73 percent and added two assists in the loss.

Garrett Johnson, Moravian (Sr., G, Allentown, Pa.)

Garrett Johnson led Moravian to a 2-0 week as the Greyhounds improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Johnson started the week with a career high 25 points to go with three rebounds and three assists in a come-from-behind win at Ursinus College. He then had 12 points, three rebounds and five assists in Moravian's victory over USMMA. Johnson connected on six three-pointers during the week including two in the USMMA contest as the Greyhounds made a school record 18 three-pointers in the victory.

Chris Kearney, Catholic (Sr., C, Centreville, Va.)

Chris Kearney helped No. 14 CUA remain unbeaten with three more wins this week, as the senior led the Cards with 20.3 points per game. Kearney also shot 61.5% from the floor and averaged 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. Kearney netted 20 points on 8-14 shooting, to go along with 5 boards and 4 blocks in Monday's win at Haverford, before finishing with 20 points (8-for-12 shooting), nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals in a 73-56 win over Frostburg State on Wednesday. Kearney finished his week with a 21-point (8-for-13 shooting), four-rebound performance in Saturday's conference-opening win at Drew.

Ross Danzig, Scranton (So., G, Clarks Green, Pa.)

Danzig scored 24 points – four shy of his career-high – to lead the Royals to a come-from-behind 60-57 win at Misericordia University on Tuesday, at the Anderson Center in Dallas, Pennsylvania. He scored 11 points in the first half to keep the Royals within striking distance after Misericordia built up a 13-point halftime lead. Danzig opened the second half with five straight points to spark an 18-4 run that gave Scranton its first lead since early in the first half. He finished shooting 57.9 percent from the field and added four rebounds.

Ross Danzig, Scranton (So., G, Clarks Green, Pa.)

Danzig earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Radisson Invitational this weekend after leading the Royals to its third straight and fifth overall title in the tournament's 11-year history. Danzig opened the season with 17 points and nine rebounds in a win over Oneonta State before scoring 22 points with 13 rebounds and six assists in the championship against Baruch. He averaged 19.5 points per game and 11 rebounds per game while shooting 43.5% from the floor. His 13 rebounds and six assists were career highs.
