TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference men's basketball coaches voted and named Catholic senior Chris Kearney the Landmark Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Susquehanna's Brandon Hedley was chosen as the Rookie of the Year.
Kearney finished the regular season averaging 17.4 points per game to go along with nearly seven rebounds per game. He boasted a 54.6 field goal percentage while shooting 71.1 percent from the free throw line. Kearney scored in double figures in all but three games and racked up six double-doubles during the regular season before adding two more in the conference tournament.
The conference coaches unanimously voted Kearney Player of the Year and obviously noted his defensive presence as well after picking him as Defensive Player of the Year. Kearney is the first player in Landmark history to earn both awards. This season he has notched 58 blocks after averaging 2.1 per game during the regular season and earning a No. 24 national ranking. His defensive proficiency helped the Catholic defense boast a top 10 national ranking for much of the season. Kearney also earned First Team All-Conference honors for the first time in his career.
Joining Kearney on First Team are forwards Reed Buck of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Brian Scholly of Juniata. Buck is a two-time First Team selection and was the 2012 Landmark Player of the Year. This season he led the conference in scoring by averaging 18.8 points per game. Scholly was Juniata's go-to guy leading the Eagles to their second straight Landmark Championship game. He averaged 16.2 points and five rebounds per game this season.
Catholic's Shawn Holmes was also named to the First Team after averaging more than 16 points per game. He ranked third in the league in scoring and second in steals with 1.9 per game. Scranton sophomore Ross Danzig also earns First Team recognition for the first time. Danzig led the Royals in scoring and rebounding this season. He averaged 15.9 points per game to go along with 7.6 rebounds per game. A two-time First Team honoree, Moravian's D.J. Strayhorn rounds out the First Team. He scored more than 15 points per game and shot nearly 41 percent from the field in conference games.
Susquehanna freshman guard Brandon Hedley was chosen as the Rookie of the Year after scoring more than 14 points per game this season. He scored in double figures in 14 games including 10 of the last 11.
For the first time in his career, Catholic head coach Steve Howes and his staff were voted Coaching Staff of the Year. In his ninth season at the helm of the Cardinals, the team is currently 24-3 and earned its first Landmark Championship on Saturday after missing out on the tournament a year ago in a tiebreaker. Catholic will host Staten Island on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Five different institutions are represented on the First Team. Catholic is the most represented with two players earning First Team recognition.
