KING'S POINT, N.Y. – The Drew men's tennis team remained unbeaten within the Landmark Conference with a 8-1 win over Merchant Marine (5-6, 1-4 Landmark). The Rangers are now 5-0 in Landmark play and 6-5 overall.
The Rangers took all three doubles matches including an 8-0 shutout at number three singles by Ryan Johnson (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and Vin Mahon (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North). The number one doubles combination of Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and Elliot Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) won their seventh-straight match with an 8-3 win over Jeff Gulitus and Frank Sysko.
The Rangers took five of the six matches in singles play without losing a game. Elliot Smego and Johnson won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2 while Gerber picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number one singles. Mahon and Scott Vander Veen (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) recorded their first victories of the season at number five and six singles respectively.
The Rangers will look for their sixth conference victory of the year at home against Catholic on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
