Scranton Is Top Choice In Landmark Women's Soccer Preseason Poll

MADISON, N.J. – After capturing the inaugural Landmark Women’s Soccer Championship in 2007, the University Scranton has been picked as the favorite to reclaim the title in 2009 according to the Landmark Preseason Women’s Soccer Poll. The head women’s soccer coaches and sports information directors at each institution that sponsors the sport were polled for the preseason ballot.

In a tight vote in which the top three teams are separated by just four points, Scranton earned first place with 59 points. The Catholic University of America claimed the second spot with 57 points, and Moravian College was just two points behind with 55 points. The fourth spot in the voting went to Juniata College which collected 37 points.

Scranton went 11-8 overall and 4-2 in Landmark play last season and welcomes back the majority of its roster as only one starter was lost to graduation. Each of the team’s four All-Conference selections return, including three first-team choices led by two-time All-Conference pick Chelsea Paskman. The Royals have 20 players returning overall.

Catholic played its way to the Landmark Championship match in 2008 before falling in overtime, and eventually finishing with a 10-8-2 overall record and a 4-1-1 Landmark regular season mark. Leading scorer and two-time All-Conference pick Kelly Donnelly is one of three returning All-Conference choices, though the Cardinals will have to replace two starters, including an All-Region performer.

The 2008 Landmark Champions, Moravian will try and defend its title with a roster featuring seven returning starters, including Landmark Rookie of the Year Arielle Caldas. The Greyhounds went 14-6-2 in 2008 while claiming the Landmark title and earning their second-straight NCAA Tournament bid, but did lose the Player of the Year and three other All-Conference picks to graduation.

Juniata finished with a Landmark regular season mark of 3-3 to earn the fourth spot in the conference postseason and posting a 9-6-1 record overall. The Eagles welcome back nine starters from 2008 team, among them are three of their four All-Conference performers including first-team All-Conference defender Melissa Johnson.

With 28 points in the voting, Drew University claimed the fifth position in the poll after a 2008 season in which the team went 8-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. Only two starters depart from a season ago, and back in the fold will be All-Conference defender Kim Miranowic and the team’s top two goal scorers from last season.

Susquehanna holds down the sixth spot in the preseason poll by collecting 24 points, four behind Drew. All-Conference forward Abby Montgomery will lead the offensive attack for the Crusaders who went 2-3-1 in Landmark action last year and 5-9-4 overall. The team’s offense returns nearly intact with five of its top-7 point producers returning in 2009.

Goucher College finished with 12 points to place seventh in the poll. The Gophers improved by four victories in 2008 with a young roster that had no seniors and just five upperclassmen. All-Conference forward Sisley Pumilia, who ranked among the Landmark leaders in goals, is one of 17 returning players for the team in 2009.

Five of the seven Landmark teams will open their 2009 schedules with matches on Sept. 1. Landmark competition will begin with three matches on Sept. 26. On that day Juniata will host Goucher, Drew will travel to face Moravian and Susquehanna will host Catholic.
